At Dermatology Partners, we believe great dermatologic care starts with doctors dedicated to medical expertise and patient well-being. Dr. Aziz Khan demonstrates this daily by combining strong clinical training with a patient-centered approach.
After completing his medical training and internal medicine residency at UConn Health, Dr. Khan grew to value dermatology’s complexity and its impact on quality of life. In this Q&A, he shares what drew him to dermatology, his main interests, and why patient education is essential for healthier skin.
1. What made you want to become a dermatologist?
My journey into medicine started with a desire to help people improve their health and quality of life. During my medical training and later my internal medicine residency at UConn Health, I had the opportunity to work closely with dermatologists and quickly became fascinated by the visual nature of the field and the profound impact skin health has on a person's quality of life.
Unlike many specialties, dermatology allows for a unique blend of complex medical diagnosis and hands-on surgical precision. It is a specialty where you can often see treatment results and the positive impact on patients fairly quickly. Helping patients feel healthier and more confident in their skin is what ultimately inspired me to pursue dermatology.
2. What are you most passionate about in dermatology?
I am especially passionate about skin cancer prevention and early detection. Skin cancer is very common, but when caught early, it is highly treatable, so regular skin checks and patient education can make a significant difference.
I also enjoy treating acne and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Staying at the forefront of new biologic therapies allows me to offer life-changing results to those who have previously struggled with their skin. Helping patients improve their skin and feel comfortable and confident again is incredibly rewarding.
3. What Made You Want to Join Dermatology Partners?
I was drawn to Dermatology Partners because of its stellar reputation for providing high-quality, patient-centered dermatologic care. The practice emphasizes not only excellent clinical treatment but also creating a welcoming and supportive environment for patients.
I also appreciated the collaborative culture among physicians and staff, where teamwork and shared knowledge help provide the best possible care. Being part of a group that values both innovation and compassion was very important to me. I am proud to be part of a team dedicated to delivering outstanding dermatologic care.
4. Why is it important to educate your patients, not just care for them?
I believe that a patient who understands their diagnosis is far more likely to achieve a successful outcome and feel empowered in their healthcare journey. When patients understand their condition and the reasoning behind their treatment plan, they are more confident and engaged in their care. Simple things like proper skincare routines, sun protection, and medication use can make a big difference in long-term results.
Taking time to educate patients also helps build trust and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship. My goal is to empower patients with the knowledge they need to keep their skin healthy. Ultimately, an educated patient is a safer, healthier, and more confident patient.
