What To Expect During a Full Body Exam - From Dr. Michael Hong

When it comes to protecting your skin, knowledge is one of your best tools. In this Q&A, Michael Hong, MD, of our Owings Mills, MD office, answers some of the most common questions patients have about full-body skin exams

—from what to expect during your visit to how to prepare and why these exams matter, even if you haven’t noticed anything unusual. Whether it’s your first screening or part of your routine care, this guide is designed to help you feel informed and confident going into your appointment.

1. How long does the exam take?

In a full-body skin exam, your dermatologist will check your skin from head to toe. It takes on average 10 to 20 minutes; it depends on your skin history, the number of moles or spots, and whether biopsies are needed

2. Can I wear makeup or nail polish?

It is generally not recommended to wear makeup or nail polish for a full-body skin exam because they can obscure any suspicious moles or spots. You can still do the skin exam if you already have makeup or nail polish on; however, your provider may ask to remove them if needed

3. What happens if my provider finds something?

If there are any concerning spots on your skin, your provider will discuss having a skin biopsy. A biopsy involves removing a small sample of the concerning spots under local anesthesia. This sample is then examined under a microscope by a dermatopathologist. Results usually take 1-2 weeks, and your provider will discuss treatment options based on the results.

4. Should I get an exam even if I don’t notice anything?

Yes, we recommend getting a skin exam even if you do not notice anything unusual. Your dermatologist may spot changes you missed and detect early signs of skin cancer, which can be subtle.

5. What information should I present to my provider?

You should not hesitate to bring up any concerns you have, any new moles or spots that are new, growing, bleeding, or changing. Your personal and family history of skin conditions, any biopsy or surgical history, and whether it is your first skin exam with your provider.
